Conservative Mayor of London Boris Johnson has provided a major boost to Tower Hamlets’ commuters, after pledging £3.5 million in investment on improvements to the borough’s transport network.
The additional investment, which will be implemented 2013-2014, will go towards improving cycle safety, traffic flow and public areas in Tower Hamlets. Boris Johnson announced that £275,000 will be spent on improving cycle routes and providing training to promote safer cycling. There will also be a £100,000 allocated to improve pedestrian crossings.
“This funding will benefit all of London and everyone living in, working in or visiting Tower Hamlets”, he said. “A world class city deserves a world class transport system and the borough will use this money to make significant improvements for local people.”
Welcoming the news, local Conservative councillor Cllr Zara Davis (Millwall) said “Thanks to cutting Labour’s waste at City Hall, Boris Johnson is able to make investments in local transport while at the same time freezing his share of the council tax bill for five years running.”
