A Tower Hamlets First councillor has admitted defrauding the people of Tower Hamlets.
Councillor Shahed Ali pleaded guilty to a charge of housing fraud, after appearing at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Monday 26 September. After pleading guilty Ali was given a five month jail term.
Councillor Shahed Ali, who represents the Whitechapel ward of the borough, appeared in court in relation to one count of housing fraud under Section 3 of the Fraud Act 2006 (fraud by failing to disclose information).
Conservative group leader Peter Golds says "Shahed Ali is the second Lutfur Rahman supporting Tower Hamlets councillor jailed for housing fraud The property that he illegally secured whilst owning a former council flat where he allegedly lived, a former council flat that he rented out, a restaurant with flats at Frinton on Sea could and should have been made available to one of the 20,000 families on the council waiting list. This man could have resigned from the council when his fraud became known, instead he continued to trouser over £10,000 in council allowances, whilst doing nothing for the people that he was elected to serve."
Poplar and Limehouse Conservatives will be fighting hard in the Whitechapel by-election triggered by the jailing of Ali. We will be fighting to get the people of Tower Hamlets the honest representation they deserve, and stamp out the self service and the graft that has gone on for too long in this borough.
