Tower Hamlets Council have made no secret of their plans to double the population of the Isle of Dogs over the next 13 years.
However, events have taken a dramatic turn with plans soon to come before the Development committee for two massive new developments, which your local Conservative councillors will be opposing.
First up is the controversial redevelopment of the Asda site. A total of 840 new flats are to be built on the Asda car park, with the petrol station being permanently closed. Properties will be built right up to the edge of the Mudchute Park and Farm.
Cllr Peter Golds (Blackwall & Cubitt Town) has been working with resident from Friars Mead who fear that their homes will be overlooked by the new development, including 23 storey towers.
A second massive development is being planned for Skylines, which borders Marsh Wall. A total of 749 new flats are set to be built, with one block reaching a massive 45 stories. This is just 5 stories less than the main Canary Wharf tower itself!
With all of this new development, our borough will soon have a higher population density than Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Gibraltar and Delhi. However, there are no new plans for road improvements, additional school places or enhanced medical facilities on the Island.
Cllr Gloria Thienel (Blackwall & Cubitt Town) added: “We will support local residents fighting this overdevelopment. However, we need the support of the community. Residents can object on the council’s website at www.towerhamlets.gov.uk. The case number is PA/11/03670."
